'Vindication': Georgia Republican shows off restitution check he got from Sidney Powell

Gabriel Sterling, the Republican chief operating officer of the Georgia Secretary of State's office, took a victory lap on Wednesday when he brandished a check his office had received from former Donald Trump attorney Sidney Powell.

As reported by WABE News' Sam Gringlas, Sterling spoke to reporters about false accusations leveled by former President Trump and his supporters about the integrity of Georgia's elections and said that Powell's $2,700 check was proof those allegations were completely baseless.

"This is step one," he said while showing the check. "It’s a small step... this is a vindication."

Powell, the conspiracy-mongering attorney whose false claims about Dominion Voting Systems rigging the 2020 election came from a woman who also said she could speak with the wind, pleaded guilty last month to six misdemeanor charges related to her effort to illegally keep Trump in power after losing the 2020 election.

Powell was required to pay Georgia $2,700 in restitution, as well as write the state a formal apology letter and agree to serve as a witness in future trials in Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' sprawling racketeering indictment against Trump and his allies.

Sterling has long been highly critical of Trump and his allies' efforts to overturn the election and has encouraged Trump supporters to understand that they have been lied to for years about the election.
