Half of Afghanistan’s population in poverty, says World Bank Report

The World Bank recently released its “Afghanistan Economic Monitor,” revealing that approximately half of the Afghan population is currently living in poverty.

According to the report, unofficial customs data from January to September 2023 indicated that Afghanistan’s total exports amounted to US$1.3 billion, marking a slight decrease of 0.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2022.

In contrast, imports into Afghanistan surged to US$5.7 billion, showing a significant 27 per cent growth during the same period.

The report highlights that Pakistan remains Afghanistan’s primary export market, accounting for 55 per cent of total exports.

India follows closely behind as the second-largest export destination, representing 29 per cent of Afghanistan’s total exports.

Interestingly, during the initial nine months of 2023, exports to Pakistan experienced a notable 15 per cent decline, while food exports to India saw a remarkable increase of 40 per cent.

These economic insights shed light on the challenges and dynamics of Afghanistan’s trade relationships and the ongoing struggle with poverty in the country.

Meanwhile, The recent earthquake in Herat has further compounded the existing challenges the county faces. With infrastructure damage and potential displacement of residents, the earthquake adds to the already dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

International organizations have warned about an impending devastating winter if adequate humanitarian aid is not provided urgently. As temperatures drop, the need for shelter, food, and medical assistance becomes increasingly critical. Without swift and substantial international support, the people of Afghanistan could face a winter marked by extreme hardship and suffering. The global community must take immediate action to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the country and prevent a catastrophe in the coming months.
