Bennett urges Pakistan to stop expelling migrants and prevent crisis

Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for the United Nations, has warned concerning the human rights situation in Afghanistan. This comes at a critical juncture, coinciding with the end of the deadline set by Pakistan for the expulsion of migrants. Bennett urged Pakistan to halt the expulsion of migrants, emphasizing that doing so could help prevent another crisis from unfolding in the region.

On Tuesday night, Mr. Bennett reiterated his call for the halt of Afghan migrant expulsions from Pakistan by posting a message on his social media platform.

He added, “I urge Pakistan to cancel its plans for the mass expulsion of Afghan migrants and refugees to prevent another crisis for Afghans.”

This comes as Wednesday, November 1st, marks the end of Pakistan’s deadline for the expulsion of Afghan migrants, and the country continues to emphasize the expulsion of migrants.

Meanwhile, Pakistani authorities have announced that migrants who do not leave the country after the specified deadline will face serious consequences.

Human rights watchdogs have also vehemently criticized Pakistan’s decision, stating that the forced expulsion of Afghan migrants violates international laws.

In addition to international criticism, the expulsion of Afghan migrants has faced strong opposition domestically as well.

It is worth noting that Anwar ul-Haq Kakar, the interim Prime Minister of Pakistan, has stated that the decision to expel Afghan migrants is not against the law, and they are giving them [illegal migrants] time to leave voluntarily.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior has warned migrants who have not yet left the country, simultaneously with the end of the specified deadline to leave Pakistan, that they have 24 hours left to leave the country, or they will face “serious” action.

According to reports, Pakistani state officials have stated that migrants arriving at the borders to leave Pakistan on November 1st will not face any obstacles.

They have also stated that the Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings will remain open for the return of migrants until 4 PM today. After that, the borders will be sealed, and migrants will be detained.

According to the Associated Press, on Tuesday, simultaneously with the end of the specified deadline, many Afghans flocked to border crossings in trucks and buses.
