Newcastle vs Arsenal: Gunners face high-flying Magpies in a thrilling Premier League contest – stream, TV channel, teams

ARSENAL face a mammoth Premier League challenge as they travel to Tyneside where high-flying Newcastle awaits.

The Gunners were hoping to be battling on all fronts this campaign after having an impressive start to the season.

However, a damning performance at the London Stadium helped West Ham dump Mikel Arteta’s men out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

And now, Arsenal will have to pick themselves up against a Newcastle side who recently thrashed Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But the North London outfit are yet to taste defeat in the league – something only bitter rivals Tottenham can also claim.

Not that such a stat will matter to Eddie Howe‘s high-flying Magpies.

They have been one of the Premier League’s most entertaining sides this season with a number of their games ending in goal gluts.

But the Gunners are far from defenceless, or toothless for that matter.

Newcastle have the chance to close the gap to the Arsenal to four points with a win.

However, given the form of rivals Manchester City, Spurs and Liverpool, Arsenal themselves can ill-afford to slip up over the weekend.

What is their form like?

After thrashing Man United 3-0 Newcastle will be high on confidence.

Even before that game, however, they have been in decent form.

They have won three of their last five league games, though they have had topsy-turvy form in the Champions League by smashing PSG and then losing to Borussia Dortmund.

Howe’s team are entertaining to say the least, but their defensive fragilities give Arsenal’s potent attack hope.

The Gunners have won three of their last five league games, with only draws against Tottenham and Chelsea running their record.

They remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier League, but Wednesday night’s defeat to West Ham may leave them feeling a bit shaky.

Like Newcastle, they can score a lot, but Arsenal have the second-best defensive record in the league in terms of goals conceded.

The head-to-head record has Arsenal as the overwhelming winners in recent years, though Newcastle did inflict a 2-0 defeat on the North Londoners in 2022 which wrecked their top-four plans that season.

What is the team news?

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe would have been devastated to see Matt Target forced off during the Manchester United win after just three minutes with a hamstring issue.

And it could possibly see the Magpies defender miss the Arsenal clash along with Harvey Barnes (foot), Aleksandr Isak (groin), Elliot Anderson (back), Jacob Murphy (shoulder), Lewis Miley (muscle) and Sven Botman (knee).

While £70million summer signing Sandro Tonali continues to serve his ten-month footballing ban.

Elsewhere, Arteta revealed that Emile Smith Rowe missed the West Ham defeat due to a knee issue which will see him sidelined along with Gabriel Jesus (hamstring), Thomas Partey (muscle) and Jurrien Timber (knee).

Who are the star men?

The Magpies will be relying on Callum Wilson to get their goals against Arsenal.

He has always been dependable and whenever he has been asked to step into the team he has produced the goods.

Howe will be hoping he can provide the same clinical edge that he did against Wolves.

Callum Wilson will be providing the cutting edge for Newcastle

Arsenal, as always, will be counting on Bukayo Saka to be their spark.

With Martin Odegaard struggling this season, Saka’s form has been key to keeping Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the season going.

His presence alone creates space for others, making him the most valuable asset they have.

What have the managers said?

Eddie Howe believes having goalscorers all over the pitch really helps Newcastle, and can hurt Arsenal.

On having 14 different goalscorers this season, he said: “Yeah that’s the aim. I think you want goals from every department of the team.

“Today we had different goalscorer, great to see, and different threats as well you know different types of goals.

“We looked a threat in the game although we didn’t have an abundance of goalmouth action we looked a threat every time we broke forward.”

Arteta believes the Gunners can use their defeat against West Ham as motivation against Newcastle this weekend.

He said: “What it shows you is that in football what matters is the day, what you did three days ago it’s irrelevant.

“What is going to happen tomorrow is going to be the most important thing.

“And again we have to use this defeat to prepare the best way to go to Newcastle and win.”

SunSport prediction

This could well be one of the most entertaining and high-quality games of the season.

However, given the respective injuries of both teams, it is hard to look beyond Arsenal escaping narrowly with all three points as they continue to pursue a first league title in 20 years.
