Wild moment Scottish non-league game abandoned after dugout rammy and horror injury
A NON-LEAGUE Scottish football match was ABANDONED in the 96th minute – moments after a dugout rammy between the two sides.
Dunipace were set to leapfrog Whitburn Juniors to the top of the East of Scotland First Division after a first half strike from Sam Colley.
But it all kicked off in a frantic period of injury time where the club’s twitter account claims a PUNCH was thrown at their PHYSIO.
The late drama didn’t end there and after tempers calmed and play resumed the referee called an early finish to the top of the table clash – despite SIX minutes of added time.
There was still a further two minutes to play when home keeper Danny Farrell suffered a serious injury in the middle of the park challenging for a 50-50 ball as his team pressed for their equaliser.
The game was stopped again to allow the Whitburn No1 to be treated for a suspected ankle break.
The severity of the injury eventually ended the contest and it will be up to East of Scotland league officials to decide the outcome with two minutes of added time still on the clock at Central Park – and a busy winter schedule for the sixth tier sides ahead.
But the crazy late spell – and updates – had the whole of the UK talking.
Reporting the dugout melee which started when the ball rolled into the visitors dugout and wasn’t returned, @DunipaceFC wrote: “It’s all kicked off. Whitburn number two just punched our physio,” on X.com.
It spread around social media and was viewed almost 250,000 times, liked more than 2000 times, and re-shared 360 times.
An eye witness said: “Pace players weren’t exactly jumping out the way to let a Whitburn player collect the ball to get the play going again.
“It turned into some pushing with most of the benches and players involved.
“A red card was shown to a Whitburn player but it calmed right back down again and restarted before the injury.”
But the incredible ending was a hot topic online – with well wishes sent to the stricken keeper.
One Dunipace fan wrote: “Do we know how the Whitburn keeper is doing, hopefully ok.”
More followed Whitburn’s Facebook confirmation: “Due to a serious injury to our goalkeeper Danny Farrell today’s game against Dunipace FC was abandoned.
“We wish Danny a speedy recovery.”
Other couldn’t believe the earlier X.com updates.
Replying to Dunipace’s post they said: “Peak amateur Scottish fitbaw”
Another added: “Suddenly thinking of a reboot of Slapshot, only with Scottish football.”
A third said said: “Wonder who gives the physio treatment?”
But another cautioned: “Rather than tweeting out the typical ‘Oh Scottish football’ type thing, got to say that’s totally unacceptable to physically assault anyone, especially the bloody physio. Hope everyone is okay!”
