David Morrell will face Sena Agbeko in final Showtime Boxing card
Super middleweight contender David Morrell will face Sena Agbeko at The Armory, Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 16.
The Premier Boxing Champions bout will headline the final Showtime Boxing card before end their association of nearly 40-years with the sport.
The two had been scheduled to meet on the Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia undercard on April 22. However, the Nevada State Athletic Commission nixed the fight when abnormalities showed up in Agbeko’s brain scan. He was later cleared and allowed to fight again.
Morrell’s manager is firstly happy to get his fighter, who is one of the most avoided fighters in boxing, back in action but also proud to be involved in the final Showtime card.
“I think it’s a tremendous honor to be the last person obviously to headline a Showtime boxing card,” said Santos. “It’s the best available opponent willing to fight David Morrell. As you can imagine nobody’s too eager to step in the ring with him.
“It’ll be interesting to see who’s on the undercard because obviously there’s no more Showtime dates.”
Morrell (9-0, 8 knockouts), rated at No. 4 by The Ring at super middleweight, won Cuban national titles at various levels before turning professional in 2019.
His amateur pedigree has helped him move quickly as a professional, and he has already beaten some very solid fighters including Mike Gavronski (KO 3), Alantez Fox (TKO 4), Aidos Yerbossynuly (KO 12) and Yamaguchi Falcao (KO 1). Although none of those is elite, the manner in which the 25-year-old southpaw has dominated them suggests he may well be.
Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) turned professional in his native Ghana in 2011. He won his first 15 fights at home before coming to America and losing for the first time against Raymond Gatica (TKO 4). After a three-year hiatus, Agbeko reeled off eight consecutive victories. That led to another step up against Vladimir Shishkin and he was well beaten dropping a wide 10-round unanimous decision.
The 31-year-old has rebounded with four wins, notably beating Winfred Harris Jr. (TKO 9) and taking the unbeaten record of Isaih Steen (UD 10).
Morrell holds the WBA ‘regular’ title at 168-pounds; however, The Ring only recognizes the most senior of the WBA titlists. In this case, Canelo Alvarez, who is universally regarded as the undisputed super middleweight champion.
