Darvin Ham says he’s ‘constantly thinking of ways’ to get Anthony Davis involved offensively

What’s the best way to go from passive Anthony Davis to destroyer of worlds AD? Darvin Ham is trying to figure that out.

Anthony Davis is as consistent — and dominant — as they come on the defensive side of the basketball. Offensively? It's a bit more touch and go.

Davis is the Lakers' second-leading scorer, averaging 22 points per game and has had several 30-point games, but he's also had a couple of duds where he failed even to reach double digits.

Against the Houston Rockets, we got the good Davis, scoring 27 points while grabbing 10 boards. Following the win, Darvin Ham discussed the team's role in keeping AD involved and humming along.

"I'm constantly thinking of ways to get him some touches, get him going," Ham said. "It's the same with his teammates…And, again, he draws a lot of attention. They had to double team, which opened up some slashing lanes and some open looks behind the double teams. It was good, man. He wants to play the game the right way but we know how forceful and how big of an impact he can make when he's down low and he's attacking in the paint. We try to feed him as much as possible to exploit that."

With non-ball handlers, the challenge always comes with getting them the touches they want and need to be effective. Every Lakers big from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Shaquille O'Neal to Pau Gasol and now Davis has a portion of their offensive production dependent on the guards on their team feeding them the ball.

"We just had to find a way," Ham said. "We weren't shooting the ball particularly well. Had to take it back to the mid-90s and go with AD in that stretch. Just feeding him on the post and we were able to get a lot done, slow them down a little bit."

Ham referring to bringing back the relic that is the '90s offense is fascinating, given that most of the conversations with the Lakers are about spreading it out and getting more looks from beyond the arc.

With their second or perhaps even best player being effective in a more archaic offense, it creates a challenge for not just Ham but all the players on the floor. Instead of spreading things out and playing a positionless game, maybe the best way to help Davis excel offensively is to funnel things to his spots and play a more traditional style.

Can the Lakers make some adjustments to allow for this option, especially down the stretch of close games or when Davis needs a bucket or two to get involved?

These are the questions Ham has to find the best answer for to ensure the Lakers reach their ceiling.
