How to use your fan to keep warm this winter without turning the heating up & the exact direction it needs to go
EVERYONE is on the lookout for nifty, new ways to keep your home warm without whacking up the heating and having to pay out a fortune.
Now, some home experts have revealed one of their tried and tested techniques to do exactly that – and, bizarrely, it involves a fan.
The pros at website Bob Vila – who pride themselves on providing “tried, true, trustworthy home advice” – recently shared their top tips.
They explained: “When winter winds blow, some homeowners dread the accompanying – and often outrageous – heating bills that Jack Frost brings with him.”
But they said their collection of hacks could help reduce the costly winter bill prices that are rapidly rising.
And while a fan might not be at the top of your list when you’re thinking of ways to make your home warmer, they said it does the job perfectly – providing you follow a simple step.
They revealed: “Warm air rises, which isn’t great news for our heating bills.
“Although it might seem as though switching your ceiling fan on would make your room colder rather than warmer, turning on the fan can actually make a room toastier so long as you set the blades to spin in a clockwise manner.”
The experts added exactly how you should be doing this, as they lifted the lid on what to look out for.
They explained: “To reverse the direction of your ceiling fan, check for a switch at the base of your fan.
“This change of direction creates a slight updraft that will push the warm air toward the walls and back down into the room.”
And they’re not the only ones who swear by using a fan to warm up their surroundings.
Website Family Handyman has also cottoned onto the hack – and shared their thoughts on why it’s a no-brainer when the weather turns colder.
They said: “Typically your ceiling fan is used to keep your room cool during the summer. But did you know that it can also help with keeping your house warm during the winter?
“That’s right, and it’s very simple to do! All you have to do is switch around the direction of your fan.
“Simply switching the direction of your fan will actually push the warm air down from the ceiling keeping your room warm (and saving you money on that energy bill).”
They continued: “If saving money is your goal, you can simply turn down the thermostat and let the fan push down the warm air that’s already in the house.
“A low setting is all you need to keep the warm air flowing.”

This comes after a woman revealed her top tip for fighting the cold in the winter months.
She said that she used a lit candle to check if there are certain spaces within her home that are letting secret draughts in.
In a video on her YouTube channel, But First, Coffee, she explained: “Using a candle, you can walk around the perimeter of your house on a day that has some good wind in the air.
“[Then] you can easily find any draughty spots whenever the candle flickers.”
And she said once you know where they are, you can seal them up with some weatherstripping tape, which can be bought from hardware stores or online on sites like Amazon.
