Nail artists share 7 nail trends that are in and 6 that are out this winter

Earth-toned polish is going to be all the rage this winter, according to Hayley Dang, nail artist at Bellacures.

The rich colors can resemble a change in season and complement winter outfits.

"Deep blues, forest greens, and espresso browns are just some of the cozy tones we've seen floating around the nail space, and we are living for it," the nail artist said.

Aura nails continue to trend but with a new twist, according to celebrity manicurist Brittney Boyce.

The design's outer-to-inner gradient is becoming popular with an added edgy design detail overtop, such as chrome.

"This trend is all over the place right now, and I'm obsessed," she told BI. "And, it gives a cool factor that's not too intense."

Denim shades of blue became popular for nails after Taylor Swift was seen wearing a dark-blue polish, according to Hannah Lee, manicurist and content creator.

"This shade is perfect if you're going for a more moody winter aesthetic," she told BI.

Bright-red polish will never go out of style, according to Dang.

"This vibrant red hue has been all over socials," the nail artist said. "It embodies confidence, sophistication, and is the perfect statement piece to your winter wardrobe."

Velvet nails were a huge hit last season and will be sticking around for the rest of the year, according to Lee.

Although the design doesn't include velvet, it mimics the popular fabric with lots of sparkles.

"It's hard to not love velvet nails, which are created by using magnetic polish and a magnet to activate the eye-catching look," the manicurist told BI.

Boyce recommended using a chrome powder on French manicures instead of a classic white.

"The chrome French is my favorite go-to nail art," the celebrity manicurist said. "This style is in, and it's here to stay."

The holiday season is a great time to add extra sparkle to your nails, according to Dang.

Instead of using glitter polish, she recommended opting for pearl and glitter gems, which can quickly elevate a manicure.

"Whether you want to do these studded embellishments in a minimalistic or a maximalist way, it is an easy way to upgrade your manis this season," the nail artist said.

Multicolored nail designs are not as popular as they used to be, according to Lee.

"I love a good Skittle, multicolored manicure, but I'm not seeing as many as I usually would," the manicurist told BI.

She said fully matching sets seem to be winning people over with a cleaner look.

Glitter ombré is also losing popularity, according to Dang.

"The look is a bit outdated in comparison to the latest trends," she told BI.

Lee recommended opting for velvet nails instead.

Half-moon nail designs come and go, and this season they're out, according to Lee.

"Negative space and two-toned looks aren't everyone's cup of tea," the manicurist told BI.

Say goodbye to white nails for now, according to Lee.

"This year, it looks like rich shades will be taking over to fit the cozy and moody aesthetic," she told BI.

Textured sweater prints and plaid nail art were trending last winter, according to Dang, but people are leaving those designs behind.

"Opposed to opting for overly festive nail looks, clients are choosing to go for a more minimalistic style that's in line with the clean girl aesthetic," she told BI.

Matte nails have officially lost their momentum, according to Dang.

"Clients are moving back toward an overall gloss, and the perks of that are less chipping and a longer-lasting nail look," she said.
