The Met Office has issued 44 flood warnings across England after heavy rain and snowfall drenched Britain.

Some 172 flood alerts have also been put in place, mainly in the south-west and the Midlands.

But with more heavy downpours on the way this week, there is no sign of any let up.

The Met Office has issued a further five warnings for torrential rain set to sweep in on Thursday, further adding to the misery following days of deadly freezing cold weather.

Forecasters say over three inches (80mm) of rain could lash the south-west when the grim weather sweeps in, causing further floods, power cuts and travel disruption.

Travel disruptions are expected to continue mainly across the south-west and the midlands amid rising river levels, resulting in devastating flooding of roads, paths and land.

Floodwaters also blocked multiple railway lines yesterday, resulting in ‘significant disruptions’, with Great Western Railways journeys being diverted and delayed.

It comes after snow fell across the UK, with some rural areas experiencing up to 10cm of snowfall.

The UK ‘turned into the Alps’ this weekend as heavy snowfall in Cumbria forced drivers to abandon their cars and local police declared a major incident.

Some 48 schools in Cumbria were closed yesterday – nearly 15% of all schools in the county.

Met Office spokesperson Grahame Madge said the risk of snow is now lessening and would ‘more or less be confined to Scottish mountains’ by the end of the week.

‘Temperatures are rising from below average now to above average,’ he added.

‘Overnight (on Monday), in parts of the north, frost remains still a risk. Tomorrow (today) could see frost from Scotland down into central southern England.

‘In general, conditions will be more wet and windy.’
