‘An unhappy player’ - Alan Shearer believes he knows why Man United star is struggling
Manchester United lost 1-0 at Newcastle United on Saturday and the players were slammed by pundits and former Red Devils stars for their woeful performance.
Marcus Rashford was one of those who was singled out for criticism, with many people questioning his apparent lack of desire to track back and chase the ball whenever his side were without possession.
Alan Shearer has also expressed his displeasure with the performance of the England international forward, and the Premier League legend believes the Man United star is simply currently unhappy.
“I don’t know if Marcus Rashford has fallen out with the manager, if he’s at odds with some of his team-mates or if he doesn’t like the position he’s playing,” he told The Athletic.
“But judging by everything I saw on Saturday in the defeat against Newcastle United, I know there’s an unhappy player there.”
Rashford has not scored from open play for Man United since September 3 and has just two goals and three assists to his name in 18 appearances across all competitions this term.
The 26-year-old is battling with some issues off the pitch having recently lost his cousin, dedicating his goal at Everton to the deceased.
His decision to go to a nightclub just a few hours after his side’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City at Old Trafford in October did not go down well with many people, and Rashford has struggled to finish some of the chances he easily put away last term.
Man United fans expect much more from their academy graduates, especially when they are local lads, and the forward has to get back to his best.
He is not being criticised for the goal drought even if that is a big problem, but it is his unwillingness to put in the hard yards in games that is frustrating the supporters.
The onus is on Rashford to start showing desire and hunger anytime he is on the pitch, which is not too much to ask for from a player earning £300,000 per week.
