'Blinking Lights Everywhere': FBI Director Raises Alarm Over Terror Threat to US
FBI director Christopher Wray raised alarm over terror threats to the United States at a Tuesday hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, saying there are "blinking lights everywhere."
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), the committee's ranking member, had said that "the lights were blinking red" before the Sept. 11 attacks and asked Wray if he thought there are "multiple blinking red lights out there."
"I see blinking lights everywhere I turn," Wray replied.
Wray said during the hearing that threats to America were "elevated."
"What I would say that is unique about the environment that we're in right now in my career," Wray said, "is that while there may have been times over the years where individual threats could have been higher here or there than where they might be right now, I've never seen a time where all the threats—or so many of the threats—are all elevated all at exactly the same time."
Wray testified in response to Graham's questions about multiple threats to U.S. national security, such as Iran, China, and Russia. He also said that threats from foreign terrorist organizations have risen since Hamas's Oct. 7 attacks on Israel.
"If you just look post Oct. 7—and I thought the threat was elevated before Oct. 7, but post Oct. 7—you've seen a veritable rogues' gallery of foreign terrorist organizations calling for attacks against us," Wray said.
"The threat level has gone to a whole 'nother level since Oct. 7," he added.
Attacks on American service members in the Middle East have increased in the wake of the Hamas massacre. Militant groups in Iraq have taken credit for more than 70 attacks on U.S. and other international troops since Oct. 17, according to Reuters.
