Police investigating fatal crash on Berlin Turnpike involving pedestrian
A pedestrian was struck and killed while trying to cross the Berlin Turnpike early Monday.
The crash was reported shortly after 5 a.m. on Route 5 near the intersection with Spruce Brook Road, according to the Berlin Police Department.
Officers who responded learned that a 68-year-old man was trying to cross the Berlin Turnpike when he was hit by a motorist heading north, police said. The pedestrian has not been identified, as police Monday morning said they were still notifying his family.
Police said the driver involved remained on scene and has been assisting with the investigation.
The Berlin Turnpike was closed in the area of the crash for some time before reopening later in the morning, according to police.
The MSARS Crash Reconstruction Team — which includes officers from multiple agencies — responded to the scene to assist in the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Anyone who witnessed the crash has been asked to contact Berlin Traffic Officer Thomas Bobok at 860-828-7080.
