Harry Redknapp reveals Man Utd failed with move for former Spurs superstar
Harry Redknapp has revealed that Manchester United were keen on signing Luka Modric from Tottenham before his switch to Real Madrid.
Although Modric was signed during Juande Ramos’ time at White Hart Lane, it was under Redknapp that he exploded at Spurs.
The English coach first employed the Croat off the left before moving him into central midfield, and he never looked back, evolving into one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Since his switch to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2012, Modric has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest midfielders to grace the game, having been a key part of five Champions League-winning sides in the Spanish capital.
The former Spurs man is still going strong at 38 years of age and might not be done adding to his long list of honours.
It was well documented that Chelsea tried to poach Modric from Spurs in 2011 but the North London club stood firm at the time and refused to allow him to go their London rivals (talkSPORT).
Manchester United wanted Luka Modric from Spurs
Redknapp has revealed the Ballon d’Or winner was also of interest to Man Utd at one point, with Sir Alex Ferguson calling to inquire about the midfielder.
The former Tottenham manager told The Sun: “I remember Fergie calling about Luka Modric and Paolo Di Canio (when Redknapp was in charge of West Ham), but for various reasons he couldn’t get the deals done.”

This does not come as a surprise as Modric had evolved into one of the best players in the Premier League at the time and it looked inevitable that he was going to reach the very top.
