Baltimore’s Cylburn Mansion deserves better treatment | READER COMMENTARY

I recently had the opportunity to tour the Cylburn Mansion. I had never been there, and it was a great opportunity to view this historic property.

The Cylburn Arboretum and Nature Education Center were wonderful, and the mansion itself is a great house. However, I was so disappointed that there was no furniture in this house and the house itself was in pretty horrible shape. Baltimore City owns this house (“Touring Baltimore’s big trees in an ‘oasis of beauty,'” Nov. 29).

Baltimore has wasted millions of dollars from gasoline wrongly used to fuel golf carts to the federal funds the Baltimore City Health Department hasn’t properly tracked and all the money given to city schools to teach students who don’t end up attending. Taxpayers are supposed to “pony up” and “shut up.” This is also true of state government including ineffective COVID test kits purchased by the last administration to all the money for the Orioles and Ravens. It is time — indeed, way past time — for the state of Maryland and the city of Baltimore to answer questions. Or the voters can express their concerns at election time. The buck has to stop somewhere.

In the meantime, how about the city putting this piece of property in their budget? Is the Cylburn Mansion not a favorite of the people who vote for the spending of money and accountability of the same?
