Help for young men with fathers behind bars | READER COMMENTARY
The story of Dakarai Baldwin, the 17-year-old who died in a triple shooting last year, was truly heart-wrenching (“A Baltimore teen’s death inspires three loved ones to combat youth violence in different ways: ‘It’s our medicine,'” Dec. 19). Everybody in his life worked hard for a different outcome including Dakarai himself. Once again, peer pressure led to fear pressure.
Living in Baltimore with an incarcerated father creates odds too steep for even the most promising young man. Fathers in prison should be given the opportunity to prove their rehabilitation using as much contact with their sons as the criminal justice system allows. Involving a third-party professional in this relationship would be ideal.
