San Jose Sharks’ lengthy injury list grows by one
The San Jose Sharks added forward/defenseman Jacob MacDonald to their already lengthy injured reserve list Wednesday.
MacDonald suffered an injury to his lower body after he scored in the third period of Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, coach David Quinn told San Jose Hockey Now on Wednesday morning before the Sharks played the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena.
Goalie Mackenzie Blackwood was ill Wednesday and did not take part in the Sharks’ morning skate. With Blackwood appearing to be unavailable, the Sharks recalled goalie Magnus Chrona from the Barracuda. Kaapo Kahkonen will start against the Kings.
The Sharks now have five players on IR, tied for the most in the NHL. MacDonald joins Matt Benning (lower body), Ty Emberson (lower body), centers Nico Sturm (hand), and Ryan Carpenter (mid-body).
MacDonald, 30, has six goals this season, the sixth-most on the Sharks. He’s most recently played as a depth forward but has also spent time this season as a defenseman.
Chrona, in his first year as a professional, has a 3-6-2 record this season with the Barracuda, along with a .900 save percentage and a 3.35 goals-against average.
The Sharks entered Wednesday on a five-game losing streak, which has dragged them into last place in the NHL with a 9-22-3 record. After Wednesday, the Sharks return home to play Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday and travel to play the Colorado Avalanche on New Year’s Eve.
