District-ditching Lauren Boebert is an election year warning for Republicans: lawmaker
MAGA firebrand Lauren Boebert’s sudden surprise move to change her district serves as a warning sign to House Republicans of trouble ahead in 2024, critics say.
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) shocked onlookers Wednesday night when she announced she would be seeking reelection in another district within the state rather than face off against two well-funded competitors in her current political home.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) argued on MSNBC Thursday morning that Boebert’s move foreshadowed a treacherous election year for far-right members of Congress, and they know it.
“I think this is a warning sign the Republicans know,” Crockett said. “They know that a Lauren Boebert cannot win in a swing district.”
A Washington Post analysis agreed, arguing the move gave Republicans a “stronger chance” of holding Colorado’s less conservative District 3, which she abandoned.
Boebert also drew scorn from her Republican opponent in the new area, state Rep. Richard Holtorf, who predicted District 4 voters will choose “steady conservative leadership” on election day.
“If you can’t win in your home, you can’t win here,” Holtorf said in a statement. “She knew she’d lose in her own district and I’ll show her that’ll [sic] she’ll lose here too.”
Salon political opinion writer Amanda Marcotte said Boebert’s decision was historic in more ways than one.

“I wrote my piece suggesting Lauren Boebert would not survive this election cycle yesterday afternoon, before her announcement,” Marcotte wrote on X.
“I had no idea I'd be proven right before we even went to publish.”
In the piece, Marcotte dubbed Boebert one of 2023’s “biggest losers” and proof of a problematic year ahead for “Lady MAGA.”
“Now she is stuck running in a crowded GOP primary for a congressional seat on the opposite side of the state from where she lives because she's too afraid of a rematch even during a year where Donald Trump is likely to be on the top of the ticket,” wrote Marcotte.
“It will be a miracle if she survives this election.”
MSNBC Host Dr. Jason Johnson, riffing on Boebert’s grope-and-vape scandal at a production of Beetlejuice earlier this year, took a lighter view.
Said Johnson, “I guess they can make her appear there if they say her name three times."
