Speaker Mike Johnson has Lauren Boebert's back as she switches to a House district on the other side of Colorado

Rep. Lauren Boebert recently announced that she's running in a district far from her own home in Colorado — and it's now clear that national GOP leadership is on board with her plan.

House Speaker Mike Johnson endorsed Boebert's reelection campaign on Wednesday, calling the Colorado Republican a "relentless force for conservative governance" in a statement.

The National Republican Campaign Committee is also backing her reelection campaign, a spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider.

Before she switched districts, Boebert's reelection prospects had become increasingly imperiled due to her "Beetlejuice" scandal and the impressive fundraising of a Democratic opponent.

In 2022, she won by less than 600 votes in the state's 3rd district — the closest House race in the entire country.

Now, she's running in the 4th district, a more Republican-leaning seat on the opposite end of the state that's currently held by Rep. Ken Buck, who is retiring in part due to his concerns about the direction of the GOP.

What Boebert's doing is commonly known as "carpetbagging," and she's not the first to do it.

But while she'll have the backing of party leadership in Washington, it's unclear how voters in the 4th district will react, and the controversial congresswoman will likely have to work hard to earn their votes.

Several Republicans are already running for the seat, and on Wednesday, the Colorado House Minority Leader announced his own campaign for the seat.
