A 24-year-old transperson, Somanatha Lathi, was arrested for the murder of his live-in partner, Rashmiranjan Baliarsingh, in Jankia, Khurda district. Lathi confessed to killing Baliarsingh due to jealousy and the discovery of his affair with another woman. The couple, both jatra artistes, had been together for seven years after meeting during a performance. Lathi had been living in Baliarsingh's house and wanted to marry him. However, trouble arose when Baliarsingh became close to a female performer, causing Lathi to fear separation. In a fit of rage, Lathi smashed Baliarsingh's head with an iron rod and fled the scene.
