‘Two day Tests are not Test matches’: Former South Africa fast bowler slams Cape Town pitch
Dale Steyn, a former fast bowler for South Africa, has attacked the Cape Town pitch. On Thursday, January 4, India defeated South Africa by 7 wickets in the shortest Test cricket match in the history of the sport. In just one and a half days, the two teams played just 107 overs of cricket.
As soon as the Test match began, it became clear that the Cape Town surface was dangerous. A few balls were lofty and caused a lot of difficulty for the batters. Because there is a reasonable layer of grass there.
In the opening session of the first day of play, India’s pacers knocked South Africa out for only 55 runs, taking advantage of a lot of movement on the ground. Although they performed better, India was bowled out for 153 runs in the first innings following an epic collapse on Day 1.
Day 1 saw the most number of wickets ever lost on South African territory—23—and an unusual end to the day. Only 79 runs were the total that the South African squad managed to score. In the game, only Aiden Markram managed to score fifty runs and more, concluding his innings with a fantastic hundred.
Dale Steyn took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to criticise the pitch and said that this Test match was pointless.
“Why we so scared of cracks? Think Sydney, Perth. Cracks so wide you can park a car inside them, and yet they always get to days 4 and 5! Pointless a Test being over so fast you don’t even see a hint of a crack. Pitches deteriorate over the days, let it happen. Two day Tests are not Test matches,” Steyn said on Twitter.
