Al-Qaeda leader’s killing highlights Afghanistan oversight: US State Department

The spokesperson for the US State Department said on Thursday that Washington holds the Taliban responsible for the increase in terrorist group activities in Afghanistan.

Matthew Miller, about the killing of Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul, issued a firm warning, stating that America is closely monitoring Afghanistan.

Mr. Miller made these remarks during a press conference regarding the rise in terrorist activities in Afghanistan, emphasizing that the Taliban must adhere to their commitments to prevent terrorism.

The spokesperson for the US State Department has called on the Taliban to take action against terrorist and quasi-military groups. Concerning the killing of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, he indirectly warned that if necessary, the United States would target these groups in Afghanistan.

He said, “We continue to monitor the situation in Afghanistan.”

Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of Al-Qaeda, was killed in an American airstrike in Kabul on 31 July 2022. The Taliban has denied the presence and death of Zawahiri in Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda has also remained silent on the circumstances of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s death despite the selection of a new leader.

Zawahiri had been in hiding for years, and he had been the leader of the terrorist group since the death of Osama bin Laden in a U.S. raid in 2011.

The Taliban does not consider groups like Al-Qaeda as terrorists and has refrained from expelling them from Afghan soil despite requests from Western and regional countries. The Taliban has stated that it will not allow these groups to launch attacks on other countries.

Regional countries, especially, are concerned about the presence of these quasi-military groups in Afghanistan. The government of Pakistan has stated in various statements that the Taliban is not preventing attacks by TTP and its affiliated groups on Pakistani soil.
