Handicapping Contests Get Underway in Canterbury Racebook

Following an 11-day break in handicapping contest action and the crowning of the 2023 Canterbury Park Handicapper of the Year, three-day-a-week Spring Tune-Up super satellite play begins Thursday, Jan. 11 followed by the annual Road to Kentucky Contest held each Saturday from Jan. 20 through May 4. In conjunction with R2K is the Bet On Yourself Contest each Saturday that allows participants to parlay contest success into extra cash.

Spring Tune-Up Supers feed into a March 23 Satellite that will award multiple entries to the Dog Days of Summer Handicapping Tournament, the longest running live bankroll contest in the country, in September. The supers are held Thursday, Friday and Saturday each week. Entry fee is $10 per contest. There is one winner of a $100 March 23 berth for each 10 entries. In other words, no take out.

Terry Severson will be defending his Handicapper of the Year title. Bruce Meyer looks to win his eighth, coming off a less than stellar 2023. Shaun Rau is the early favorite based on recent competitive finishes. Rau won the 2020 Handicapper of the Year title and has been in the exacta multiple times. Several players that compete on a regular basis just need to put together a couple of major contest wins and cannot be dismissed.
