China has pledged to protect the Maldives' sovereignty and upgraded ties with the strategic Indian Ocean archipelago after signing key infrastructure deals. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, elected in September, pledging to cultivate strong ties with China and eject Indian troops. He met with President Xi Jinping, announcing the "elevation of bilateral ties".
