Girls basketball

No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 75, No. 5 Sacred Heart Cathedral 42

On a night in which UConn-bound Morgan Cheli reached 1,000 career points, Mitty added more reason to celebrate as the Monarchs built a 54-22 halftime advantage on their way to a dominant WCAL victory over visiting SHC.

McKenna Woliczko scored 24 points, Cheli finished with 14 and Elana Weisman chipped in with 13 to lead the nation’s top-ranked team to its 13th consecutive victory to open the season. The Monarchs are 3-0 in the WCAL.

Needing nine points for 1,000, Cheli reached the mark with a drive through the lane for a layup in the third quarter. Mitty immediately called timeout, and Cheli’s teammates ran onto the court to celebrate with the senior guard.

SHC slipped to 9-2, 1-1.
