Ryan Gosling aims for Critics Choice redemption in rematch against Golden Globe champ Robert Downey Jr.
Is Ryan Gosling‘s scene-stealing performance in “Barbie” Kenough to win at the Critics Choice Awards on January 14? He’s aiming for a comeback after the Golden Globes, where Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) defeated him for Best Film Supporting Actor.
Judging from the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, Downey will win Best Supporting Actor again. He gets leading odds of 10/3 with support from eight out of 10 Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets, all 11 Gold Derby Editors who cover awards year-round, 13 of our All-Star Top 24 who had the best prediction scores when you combine multiple years’ Critics Choice results, and over 1,100 everyday Users who make up our largest and often smartest predictions bloc.
This is the fourth Critics Choice nom for Downey, who was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actor for “Tropic Thunder” (2008) and twice for Best Actor in an Action Movie for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “The Avengers” (2012) and “Iron Man 3” (2013). But it would be his first win, and he has arguably the strongest narrative going into these awards: after struggling with addiction earlier in his career he came back to become one of the biggest box office stars in the world. Now he’s turning all that goodwill into gold.
But Gosling is in the film that set a new record for the most Critics Choice nominations ever (18), and he’s been nominated five times in his career including Best Actor for films the academy overlooked him for: “Drive” (2011) and “First Man” (2018). So we know this group is especially fond of him. He’s backed by two Experts, 11 All-Stars and more than 300 everyday Users. On top of that, he has majority support from our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Critics Choice film winners. Are they onto something?
