Biden administration marks Roe v. Wade anniversary

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- The Biden administration began its nationwide push in support of reproductive rights Monday on what would have been the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Democrats see this as a winning issue as Republicans campaign to outlaw abortion nationwide.

"The government should not be telling her what to do with her body!," said Vice President Kamala Harris during the kickoff of her "Fight for Reproductive Freedoms" tour.

"Stop playing politics with a woman's life and freedom. Let doctors do their job," said President Joe Biden ahead of a meeting with his Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access.

The nation's top two Democrats blame the current GOP frontrunner, former President Donald Trump, for the end of Roe, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that provided women with the constitutional right to an abortion.

"He handpicked three Supreme Court justices because he intended for them to overturn Roe," Harris said. "This is in fact a healthcare crisis."

Republicans also see reproductive rights as a winning issue for them in this year's presidential election.

"Every unborn child has a value that is too profound and precious to ignore," House Speaker Mike Johnson, (R-La.), said during the annual March for Life in D.C. Friday.

Johnson and other members of Congress, including U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, (R-N.J), joined thousands of anti-abortion advocates to celebrate the end of Roe.

"Lives are being saved!,” Smith told the crowd. “Yeah, we'll have a setback here and there. Every human rights struggle does. But we are undeterred!"

President Biden and Vice President Harris, along with their spouses, will advocate for reproductive rights Tuesday during a campaign rally in Virginia.
