'I regretted that almost immediately': Former NH Trump voter reveals why she flipped
As New Hampshire voters take to the polls in today's first-in-the-nation primary, one longtime Republican voter — and former supporter of ex-president Donald Trump — loudly condemned the GOP frontrunner after casting her ballot.
CNN's Omar Jimenez interviewed a 74-year-old GOP voter at a polling place in Manchester on Tuesday afternoon who flipped from backing Trump to former UN ambassador Nikki Haley.
She explained that while Haley wasn't her first choice (the voter initially supported former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie), she was the only non-Trump candidate remaining.
"I voted for Nikki Haley because I was voting against Donald Trump," she said. "I've lived in a constitutional democracy all my life and I want it to remain that way, and I want my grandchildren to grow up in one. Not a dictatorship."
"I voted for [Trump] in 2016. I am a registered Republican. And I regretted that vote almost immediately," she continued. "Especially on his trip to Europe where he insulted our allies and praised Putin."
The voter told Jimenez that she was so disgusted by Trump's press conference in Helsinki, Finland alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018 that she cast her vote for President Joe Biden in 2020. She added that she equated a second Trump presidency with "fascism."
"I want the world to be a safe place, I believe in a strong NATO, my father fought in World War II to defeat fascism, and I want it to remain defeated," she said.
The first round of voting in the Granite State happened at midnight in Dixville Notch, at the northern tip of the state. Nikki Haley won all six votes.
