BRITS can save over £300 with a simple change to their shopping habits when it comes to fuel, experts have claimed.
Specialists from Hippo Leasing warned that you could be leaving cash on the table at your local forecourt.
The company’s analysis of petrol prices found that big savings could be found simply through shopping around different garages in your area.
Checking for the cheapest fuel within a five-mile radius could spare precious pennies on every tank.
Hippo’s study found that drivers in Coventry could see the largest savings, with a gap of almost 40p per litre between the cheapest and most expensive pumps in the city.
Given that the average motorist fills up 16 times a year and that the average fuel tank holds around 50 litres, that represents a saving of £320 annually.
Drivers in Leicester saw the second biggest discount, with a potential £312 up for grabs.
Likewise, road users in Wigan could save themselves £289.
Taking the average prices across 50 UK cities, the research found an average saving of £7.96 per tank of fuel, meaning a cut of £127 annually.
And to stretch the pennies even further, Hippo recommended a change in driving style to try and conserve fuel.
Managing Director Tom Preston told The Express: “Driving smoothly, with less stopping and starting will help save the amount of petrol you use.
“Also, keeping tyres properly inflated, and shedding unnecessary weight can significantly reduce the cost of your journey.
“Don’t wait for your dashboard light to flash to tell you to fill up.
“We found it will cost you on average 35p to drive your van an extra few miles to a cheaper station in the area.
“This would be worthwhile if the savings on pence per litre are dramatic enough.”
