In a career spanning more than 75 years, Nariman was involved in several landmark cases, including the Bhopal gas tragedy case where he represented American chemicals company Union Carbide. In 1975, soon after the declaration of Emergency, he resigned as additional solicitor general of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was pained at Nariman's death. In a post on microblogging platform X, Modi termed him as one of the "most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals".
