Manchester United handed huge injury blow with key defender set to miss rest of season
Manchester United have been rocked by the news that Luke Shaw could miss the rest of the season after suffering an injury relapse in the recent victory over Luton Town, the Daily Mail reports.
The 28-year-old suffered a recurrence of a leg injury that forced him off at half-time in United’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
After recovering from the setback, Erik ten Hag named Shaw in the starting line-up for the trip to Kenilworth Road, and the Dutch manager may be made to rue that decision.
The England international failed to make it to the half-time whistle, pulling up two minutes into stoppage time. He was replaced by Victor Lindelof.
Shaw was subsequently seen limping onto United’s team bus, and there are concrete fears he could miss the remainder of the season.
United have endured a turbulent campaign, but they’ve been gaining momentum recently, winning their last four Premier League games as they look to secure a spot in the Champions League.
Ten Hag’s troops are still competing in the FA Cup but may have to continue their domestic endeavour without a recognised left back in the team.
Shaw’s replacement, Tyrell Malacia, has yet to feature for United this season following knee surgery. He still has some way to go before returning to full fitness after suffering a setback in his recovery.
United have been plagued with injuries this season, particularly in defence, with Lisandro Martinez also sidelined for eight weeks with a knee ligament injury.
The club cut short Sergio Reguilon’s loan spell from Tottenham Hotspur in January when Shaw and Malacia were nearing a return to full fitness. But that decision may now blow up in their faces.
Diogo Dalot could replace Shaw, but an injury to fellow right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka complicates matters.
Ten Hag will likely be forced to deploy one of Lindelof or Sofyan Amrabat at left-back, and both players have struggled in that role.
