"Really bad": Rooney identifies United's biggest issue right now

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has given his verdict on the current state of his former club. 

The ex-England international spent most of his playing career at United, where he won five Premier League titles and the Champions League. 

He has the distinction of being the record goalscorer for the Red Devils, ahead of Bobby Charlton and Denis Law, with 253 goals.

Rooney turned to management following his illustrious playing career but wasn’t as successful in the coaching field. 

He was most recently sacked as Birmingham City manager after a series of disappointing results. 

The 38-year-old is currently out of work, but he appeared on the Stick to Football podcast this week to talk about his former club.

He said: “I think there is talent in there but I just think there is a mindset which needs to change. 

“You watch some games and you think ‘really good’, but then all of a sudden there is a switch which flips.

“They can go from being really good to really bad, and there is a lack of consistency.”

Recent results have been positive

Manager Erik ten Hag was under pressure as the team failed to perform consistently.

However, the Dutchman has inspired his side to an excellent winning run of four consecutive Premier League matches.

While the Red Devils haven’t been entirely convincing with their performances, the recent results have been positive.

United’s backline is still vulnerable but attackers Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have looked sharp.

Kobbie Mainoo has also shown the potential to grow into a world-class central midfielder. 

The recent results have given United a good chance of finishing in the top four, as they are just five points behind Aston Villa.
