35 roosters rescued, 9 people detained in Caldwell County cockfighting bust
CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) -- The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office recently rescued 35 roosters from what it said was a large cockfighting ring.
The sheriff's office said in a post on its Facebook page that nine people were detained, 20 vehicles and one trailer towed, and around 35 roosters were seized from 3090 Dry Creek Road in Lockhart.
“Cockfighting is both inhumane and rampant in Texas, with fighting birds moved regularly over the U.S.-Mexico border,” Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action said. “We applaud the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office for its work on this case to stamp out cockfighting and associated criminal activity in Texas.”
Animal Wellness Action said in a release it is leading a national campaign against staged animal fighting and is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information on the location of cockfighting and dogfighting operations, especially for information that leads to arrests and convictions. Tipsters can email animalcrueltytips@animalwellnessaction.org.
The investigation is ongoing, the sheriff's office noted.
