'Most serious target': Man Utd want to agree deal for €40m star with 19 goal contributions - report
Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong has emerged as the ‘most serious target’ for Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window, as per SportBild (page 23).
The Red Devils currently have Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as their right-back choices, but there is uncertainty over the latter’s future beyond this season.
His present contract expires in June next year, and the club’s hierarchy are likely to sanction his departure unless there is an agreement over a new long-term deal.
Amidst this, SportBild claim that Frimpong has emerged as a ‘most serious target’ for United.
The Red Devils already had their sights on him in 2023, but had concerns over his height. He has answered any doubts with his quality performances this term.
Frimpong currently has a €40 million release clause in his Leverkusen contract.
Frimpong would be a solid upgrade on Wan Bissaka
Wan-Bissaka has been one of the best tacklers in the Premier League for some point of time, but he has struggled to make much of an impact in the attacking department.
As a result, Dalot has got the regular nod ahead of him this term. His ongoing injury issues have not helped him and United may contemplate his exit in the summer.
In our view, Frimpong would be a solid upgrade on Wan-Bissaka due to his attacking attributes.
The former Celtic man started off his career as a right-back, but he has flourished from the right wing-back position since his move to the Bundesliga with Leverkusen.
The 23-year-old has registered nine goals and 10 assists from just 28 outings. Aside from his goal contributions, he has also won close to foul duels per game with 1.7 take-ons.
His ability to make regular overlapping runs would suit the playing style under manager Erik ten Hag. A deal could be easy to pull off particularly if United are back in the Champions League.
The club are presently five points adrift of the top four and should fancy their chances of securing the berth with the inconsistent form of Aston Villa and Tottenham currently in front of them.
