Portland man accused of January fatal shooting arrested in California, charged with murder
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Police have arrested a man in California for his alleged involvement in the murder of Deshawn Pledger in the Hazelwood neighborhood back in January, the first recorded homicide of 2024, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
Police say the initial call started as a welfare check to a home on Southeast 106th Avenue off of Division Street just before 11 p.m. the night of Jan. 8. When officers arrived, they reported finding Pledger dead.
The PPB Medical Examiner determined that Pledger died of homicide by gunshot wound.
Detectives with PPB's Homicide Unit were able to identify 32-year-old Xavier Lucas as a suspect in the shooting and on Thursday, members of the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force arrested him in Hesperia, California.
Lucas was booked into the San Bernadino County West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, California on charges of second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm.
