Approach abortion issue with compassion | READER COMMENTARY

I am writing in response to the recent article, “Democrats failed in using abortion against Larry Hogan in last decade. Will it work in 2024?” (Feb. 23). As a concerned citizen, I believe it is crucial to address the current discourse surrounding abortion rights, particularly in the context of political campaigns.

The article highlights the shifting landscape of abortion politics with Democrats signaling a change in strategy regarding the issue. It is evident that the conversation around abortion has become increasingly polarized, with attempts to use it as a political weapon becoming all too common. However, it is essential to remember that abortion is a deeply personal and complex issue that should not be exploited for political gain.

I urge politicians and voters alike to approach the topic of abortion with compassion, empathy and a commitment to understanding diverse perspectives. Rather than using it as a divisive tool, we should work toward creating a society where individuals have access to great health care including reproductive services and where everyone is feeling safe and respected to make decisions on their own.

I call on all candidates and elected officials to prioritize policies that promote reproductive justice and uphold the fundamental rights of all individuals. Let us move forward with empathy and understanding, recognizing that the right to make decisions about one’s body is a basic human right that should be protected and respected.
