Dementia care support extended in Liverpool

Liverpool City Council is to extend its dementia support services with the opening of new beds for respite and specialist care.

Sedgemoor care home in Norris Green is expanding, with 10 additional permanent beds for dementia patients and a further 10 short term beds for carers, who need some respite.

Demand for care for families living with someone with dementia has been rising in recent years, leading to a requirement for additional facilities.

The Sedgemoor site is specially designed for people with dementia; it is open plan with lots of natural light to provide a calm and peaceful atmosphere. There is also a secure and safe garden area where activities take place.

The site in Norris Green provides reablement facilities and also day support for people with dementia. It is now expanding its service to provide specialist respite facilities for people living with dementia, as well as specialist 24 hour care facilities.

The site is specially designed for people with dementia with naturally lit spaces, and is open plan to provide a calming atmosphere and a peaceful, secure and safe garden area where activities take place.

The new services will be opened on Monday 11 March by Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Cllr Angela Coleman.

Councillor Angela Coleman, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “Family carers for people living with dementia undertake an extremely valuable role in supporting their loved ones to remain as independent as possible, for as long as possible, in their own homes with family care.

“We recognise that family caring roles can be very rewarding but, at times, carers who are willing and able to provide care may need support in order to continue to do so. Some carers benefit from respite care that can be planned in advance to provide a regular break.

“Sometimes for people with dementia, continuing to live at home becomes more difficult as their illness progresses, and it is necessary to consider a more supportive dementia care home environment.

“We have previously had a limited offer to provide planned respite care for people with dementia, and this addition of beds will help those living with the condition and is part of our commitment to provide the best possible care for our residents.”
