What’s next for the 2023 Oscar winners?
So, the Oscars have been and gone and there were few surprises in the acting categories. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor for “Oppenheimer” while Best Actress went to Emma Stone (“Poor Things”). Best Supporting Actor was taken home by Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph claimed Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers.” But let’s not spend too much time looking back. Let’s look forward. With that in mind, what have these four acting winners got coming up next?
Murphy won his first Oscar for portraying J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan‘s biopic. His next project is “Small Things Like These,” which just premiered to great acclaim at Berlinale. Directed by BAFTA nominee Tim Mielants, the film follows Murphy as a father in 1985 who uncovers the shocking secrets of the local convent. After that, Murphy will star in another biopic. This one, “Hippie Hippie Shake,” will see Murphy as Australian writer and activist Richard Neville. Co-starring Sienna Miller, the comedy-drama will follow Neville during 1960s London through various protests.
Stone, who just picked up her second Best Actress Oscar (she has one for “La La Land”), has a couple of exciting projects ahead. First, she will star in “Cruella 2,” which is again directed by Craig Gillespie and written by “The Favourite” and “Poor Things” scribe Tony McNamara. Plot details are under wraps. Meanwhile, she’ll feature in two more Yorgos Lanthimos films. The first is “Kinds of Kindness,” which was previously called “And” and features Stone’s “Poor Things” co-star Willem Dafoe and her “The Favourite” colleague Joe Alwyn along with Margaret Qualley, Hunter Schafer, and Jesse Plemons. The second is untitled and plot details are under wraps for both. She is also producing the TV series “Little Films” and the movie “Little White Corvette.”
Randolph has two big projects coming out. The first is the action-comedy “Bride Hard,” which also features Rebel Wilson. The story follows a mercenary group who takes a wedding hostage only to discover that the Maid of Honor is a secret agent determined to save her best friend’s wedding. And she’ll also appear in the action-thriller “Shadow Force” opposite Mark Strong. That one will follow an estranged couple with a bounty on them who are forced to go on the run with their son as a unit of shadow ops tracks them down.
Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor after three prior nominations for his role in “Oppenheimer.” He’s got a full slate, too. He has what seems like a small role in Jamie Foxx‘s feature film debut as a director, “All-Star Weekend,” which follows two friends who form a rivalry over their favorite basketball player. Downey Jr. is also set to reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes in the third outing of Guy Ritchie‘s “Sherlock Holmes” trilogy. That one is in pre-production. Meanwhile, the A24 TV series “The Sympathizer” will see Downey Jr. appear on our screens sooner rather than later — and in multiple guises. Park Chan-wook‘s HBO series depicts a Vietnamese plant who flees to the USA near the end of the Vietnam War only to secretly spy and report back to the Viet Cong. Downey Jr.’s production company, Team Downey, produces this one while Downey Jr. pops up in “several antagonist roles.”. Downey Jr. is also producing Richard Linklater‘s John Brinkley biopic as well as Shane Black‘s next movie, “Play Dirty,” which stars Mark Wahlberg.
