Emotional Kate Garraway fights back tears as she talks about Derek Draper’s final documentary on GMB
KATE Garraway fought back tears as she opened up on a new documentary about her late husband Derek Draper.
The ITV anchor, 56, returned to Good Morning Britain following a period of sickness last week, telling viewers she would be filming the show, entitled Derek’s Story, today.
Former political lobbyist Derek tragically died aged 56 in January.
He was left fighting for life in hospital after suffering a massive heart attack.
Yet the businessman had already been one of the UK‘s longest suffering patients of Covid, and was already tackling long-term after-effects of the virus.
Now a new documentary will capture the final year of Derek’s life – at “Derek’s wish” – and shed the spotlight on the important role of carers across the country.
Kate told Thursday’s GMB the hard-hitting programme will air on March 26 and her co-host Susanna Reid said it was “so powerful.”
The mum of two said of her late spouse: “He was a loud strong man and it was one of the cruelties, and it doesn’t have to be Covid, that they feel very strongly that that voice is being taken away.
“So it’s [the documentary is] a chance to give it back.”
Kate added: “There’s lots of good people in the care system – people who are fighting for things to be better within the constraints – they need their voices heard.
“But we will see when I’ve finished it … it’s the documentary I am going off to do today.
“So there’s the final edits on it, I am sure we will talk later.”
It will be Kate’s third documentary on Derek’s covid battle.
This included documentary Finding Derek, which followed his battle to gain consciousness from his induced coma.
He sadly passed in January, with his funeral in February, where their daughter Darcey helped to carry Derek’s coffin.
Kate recently threw a huge 18th birthday party for Darcey which she said Derek would have wanted to be “marked and special.”
Previously, Kate had told of Darcey’s heartbreaking last words to her father.
She told her ITV show: “It was a challenge to make sure he knew that he wasn’t letting us down because he couldn’t get through this last one.
“They were so beautiful, the children, about that.”
Kate then said Darcey’s final heart-touching words to her dad before he died were: “Don’t worry about us, don’t worry about mum. We’ll be fine because you live on through us.”
