AI is ‘extinction-level threat to humans’ warns US in call to limit power or risk ‘nuclear weapon’ style catastrophe
THE US State Department has warned that the accelerating speed at which AI is being developed could be “catastrophic” for humanity.
That’s according to a new report that looked into the risks associated with AI.
The report is called An Action Plan to Increase the Safety and Security of Advanced AI, according to Futurism.
It’s 247 pages long and was first commissioned in 2022.
The report involved speaking to over 200 experts.
This included experts at OpenAI, Google, and Meta.
The report says that the US government needs to move “quickly and decisively” to look into minimizing the power given to developing AI.
The report claims that we could face an “extinction-level threat to the human species” if no action is taken.
This comes as Peter Deng, the Head of ChatGPT, revealed he thinks we should be accelerating AI development but cautiously.
The artificial intelligence expert told an audience his views at this week’s South By Southwest conference in Austin, Texas.
“I am kind of somewhere in the middle. With any new technology there’s going to be really positive use cases but there’s somethings we really need to consider,” he said.
He thinks safe acceleration is possible if all developers are cautious.
Deng isn’t alone in this belief but there are other AI experts have called for development to slow down.
“The rise of advanced AI and AGI [artificial general intelligence] has the potential to destabilize global security in ways reminiscent of the introduction of nuclear weapons,” the new report warns.
It also says providing open-source information on powerful AI models should be made a criminal offense.
Even Elon Musk has raised concerns over the speed at which AI is being developed and the lack of safeguards.
He previously signed an open letter that urged for a pause on creating new systems “more powerful” than current bots like ChatGPT.
Over 1,000 industry experts also signed that letter.
