Former EFL Star Thinks Portsmouth’s ‘Massive Gamble’ Was ‘Genius Move’

Adrian Clarke has credited the Portsmouth board for the appointment of John Mousinho as their manager last year and admitted that at the time it was a massive gamble.

 

Mousinho was a managerial rookie when he was appointed as the Portsmouth boss in January last year.

 

He had some coaching experience at Oxford United, but it was his first crack at being a manager and he led them to an eighth-place finish in League One, along with an eleven-game unbeaten run at the end of the 2022/23 season.

 

 

 

Portsmouth are currently leading the League One table and are favourites to earn automatic promotion to the Championship.

 

Clarke stressed that Mousinho deserves plaudits for building a resilient team that can see out tight wins.

 

 

The former EFL star also insisted that the Portsmouth board deserve some credit as well and appointing him as their new manager last year was a bold move.

 

Clarke said on the What The EFL Podcast: “14 wins by just a single goal this season, so the team are sort of seeing it out really well in some really tight games.

 

 

“A lot of the credit has to go to the head coach John Mousinho.

 

“It was a massive gamble when they appointed him but [it was] a genius move.

 

“How good is this guy!”

 

Portsmouth will return from the international break with a trip to Wycombe on Friday, 29th March.
