Most small businesses have ‘lost trust in government’, new polling shows

MORE than two thirds of British small business leaders think the Tories have “lost the trust of the business community”, new polling shows.

A survey by Opinium found 60 per cent of small-scale entrepreneurs think “the last few years of chaotic government have damaged my business“.

And two-thirds of small business leaders believe “Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives are out of ideas”.

The figures come as senior industry leaders have warned Labour plans to shake up employment rights could leave workers with more insecure jobs.

Under Deputy Leader Angela Rayner’s “new deal” zero-hours contracts would be banned and employees would be able to claim unfair dismissal from day one at work.

Business figures say this could trigger longer probation periods, more fixed term contracts and a surge in agency staff use.

Labour remains locked in negotiations with the sector ahead of an election.

But Ms Rayner and Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds have insisted the reforms will boost the economy.

Mr Reynolds has been travelling Britain since December last year hosting “roadshows” to improve Labour relations with entrepreneurs.

He told The Sun: “Labour knows the value of small business. It’s not just about the jobs they create or the economic growth they generate – it is small business that brings much needed richness to our economy.

“The local café for your morning coffee on the way to the station. The mortgage broker who went above and beyond to help you get your first house. The plumber that came out-of-hours to save the day.

“Our plan will give small and medium sized business the backing it needs to reach new heights, a plan to bring the voice of small business right to the heart of Government and ensure we are delivering.”
