Takashi Murakami Is Launching His Own Flower-Shaped Slides

Takashi Murakami has announced a new footwear venture that will make its debut with slides in the shape of his signature flower motif.

The Japanese artist made the announcement for the new enterprise, the name of which has yet to be revealed, Wednesday night on Instagram Live. However, Murakami did announce the name of the first silhouette, the Ohana Full-Bloom, and that it will be shown this weekend at Complex Con Hong Kong.

“Ohana” is derived from a Japanese phrase that means “field of flowers,” and Murakami’s flower character has been a fixture of his artwork and products. The smiling flower forms the strap for the all-green Ohana Full-Bloom, which looks to be constructed out of a molded foam and features a wavy sole.

In addition to the Ohana Full-Bloom, Murakami revealed a number of other silhouettes riffing on his flower mark. Because Murakami was streaming from a factory, it’s not clear what was merely a sample and what may go on to release later. Other colorways for the Ohana Full-Bloom could also be seen among the footwear.

Murakami has long been a fixture in the streetwear and sneaker scene, in part because of his relationship with the likes of Kanye West, now known as Ye, and Pharrell. His flower plush pillows have become a ubiquitous site among streetwear enthusiasts, with his crossover appeal akin to that of Kaws.

While Murakami’s Ohana Full-Bloom slide will be shown at Complex Con, no announcement has been made for when and how it will actually go on sale. Footwear News will keep you abreast of any updates.
