Report: Club rejected a £43m bid from Atletico Madrid before Spurs swooped 

The Athletic have revealed that Atletico Madrid failed with an offer for Brennan Johnson last summer before Tottenham signed the winger from Nottingham Forest.

The topic of Johnson’s £47.5m deadline day move to Spurs last summer has hit the headlines after Forest were found to have broken the profit and sustainability rules and were handed a four-point deduction.

Earlier this week, The Mirror claimed that Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were not happy that the transfer fee they got from Tottenham for Johnson was not taken into account with a deadline of June 30 set by the Premier League to compute financial results.

A report from the Premier League’s independent commission, which investigated the matter, found that Forest rejected three offers from Brentford for Johnson last summer, worth £32.5m, £35m and £40m, before Tottenham finally signed the winger.

Atletico’s failed move for Brennan Johnson

The Athletic have now revealed that Atletico Madrid had also failed with an offer for the Wales international last summer.

The report states that Diego Simeone’s men submitted a bid of £42.9m for Johnson but Forest turned it down and demanded that the La Liga side pay £55.8m.

The outlet further reveals that the Midlands club also offered the 22-year-old to other clubs, including Manchester United, but the Red Devils showed no interest in the player at the time.

It is not surprising that Simeone wanted Johnson, given how well-rounded the Tottenham winger is and the defensive work that he consistently delivers out of possession. The 22-year-old would have undoubtedly been an excellent fit for Atletico’s system.
