Russia and China veto US proposal for immediate ceasefire in Gaza
Russia and China vetoed the draft resolution proposed by the United States for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages at the UN Security Council meeting.
Previously, the United States had vetoed several resolutions on ceasefire. This was the first time its own proposal was tabled at the Security Council.
Among the 15 United Nations Security Council members, 11 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while one country abstained. Russia and China, along with Algeria, opposed the US proposed resolution.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US representative to the United Nations, said before the voting session that her country wants to see an immediate and sustainable ceasefire as part of an agreement to free the hostages from Hamas and provide humanitarian aid to Gaza.
She stated that the United States, Egypt, and Qatar are working around the clock in the region to ensure an immediate and sustainable ceasefire.
Since the beginning of Ramadan, more than 800 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza due to relentless airstrikes and military operations by Israel in the region.
The violence has escalated dramatically, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. Amidst this devastation, urgent humanitarian assistance is crucial to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the ongoing crisis.
