‘I know it seemed a bit weird’ – Hugo Lloris sheds light on talk with Levy before Spurs exit

Hugo Lloris has revealed that he knew his time at Tottenham Hotspur was about to come to an end following the 2022 World Cup, admitting that he and Daniel Levy had both agreed that it was time to part ways.

Lloris left Spurs back in January after 12 long years at the club, having served as the captain of the club for the majority of that time.

The World Cup winner’s departure certainly signals the end of an era at Tottenham, with the Frenchman now holding the record for the most Premier League appearances in Spurs history.

It came as a surprise to many when the 37-year-old stayed put at Hotspur Way last summer despite being relegated to third choice behind Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Foster.

The goalkeeper eventually made the move to Los Angeles FC in the winter but he explained that the decision had been made nearly a year ago, explaining that he had a conversation about his future with Levy following the World Cup in Qatar.

Lloris told The Times: “When I retired from the national team after the World Cup, what was happening to the club meant I was on a different page.

“I had a conversation with Daniel and we felt, on my side but also on the club’s side, that it was the end of an era. He felt the club needed to start something new and I totally understood. It was also my feeling.

“We decided to split ways but even if I couldn’t find the right spot in the summer I stayed patient and was waiting for the right move. I know it seemed a bit weird from the outside but I committed to the training sessions and I was preparing myself to leave.”

Lloris might have ended up staying six months longer than he initially expected to but the former Lyon man insisted that there was never any awkwardness between him and Ange Postecoglou.

He added: “When Ange arrived the situation was clear. The club presented to him the situation about the goalkeepers, the club decided to bring in Vicario. So with Ange, there was never any problem. There was a cordial relationship, with respect, there was no issue.”

While Lloris’ spell at Tottenham might not have ended the way the goalkeeper would have wanted, there is no doubt that the fans will remember him by the best years that he produced in a Spurs shirt. He is undoubtedly one of the club’s biggest legends of the modern era.
