6 earthquakes hit Oregon Coast, one moderate in magnitude
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Things were shaking on the Oregon Coast late Tuesday night.
A total of six earthquakes struck the ocean off the Oregon coast between the hours of 8 and 9 p.m. – with one reaching moderate levels.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports the earthquakes ranged from a magnitude 3.5 to a magnitude 5.7. Each whole number increase measures an earthquake that is ten times stronger in magnitude.
The strength of the earthquakes made it possible for residents living in Salem, Ore. to feel light tremors from roughly 250 miles away.
Each of the quakes occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers – or 6.2 miles – from sea level.
