‘Nothing left’ cry fans as charity shop chain with 600 stores abruptly closes branch after 10 years

FANS of a popular charity shop chain with 600 branches have been left devastated after one of its stores abruptly closed.

The branch closed yesterday, prompting fans to jump on social media after seeing the shutters close for the last time.

The Cancer Research shop which sits on York’s busy Coney Street had been there for a decade – serving loyal locals who popped in during weekly shopping trips.

But yesterday the store was closed for good after the firm said it had become “no longer financially viable” to keep it open.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “We’ve had some of the most amazing staff and volunteers in the Coney Street shop and they have done a fantastic job over the past decade.

“I want to say a huge thank you to each and every one of them.

“We sincerely hope our customers will continue to support Cancer Research UK and our work towards a world where people can live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.

“All are very welcome to shop or donate goods at our shop in Knaresborough and our two shops in Harrogate.”

Fans of the branch immediately jumped online to share their frustration at the closure – with some saying they’ll be “nothing” left in York if closures continue.

One user said: “If a charity shop isn’t viable, something is very badly wrong.”

A second added: “Such a shame it was a great charity shop..”

And a third wrote: “Nothing left in York , getting worse greedy rent prices.”

One user noticed multiple other shops close in the area.

The user said that once Millets – another store next to the now-closed Cancer Research branch – goes,  the “whole corner” will be vacant.

They said: “Only need Millets to go and the whole of that corner is vacant. I think someone has a plan.

“Don’t forget TK Maxx has been shut for 18 months and Hard Rock cafe has pulled out.”

END OF THE HIGH STREET

It’s not the only shop closures so far this year, and as more high street shops slam their shutters closed for good, Brits worry that in the not-to-distant future they’ll be no shops left to visit.

Popular supermarket Lidl has announced multiple closures that will take place this year.

Areas affected include Devon, London, Bradford, Lancashire, Stockton-on-Tees, Bristol and Somerset.

Elsewhere, The Original Factory Shop is pulling the shutters down on its Taunton branch for the final time on April 6.

And Papa Johns- the UK’s second favourite pizza firm – is shutting down many of its stores over the forthcoming months.
