I have 6 different uses for the same fruit in my garden – it can deter pests, reduce weed growth, and boost soil

It can deter pests, reduce weed growth, and boost soil production in your garden all in one.

Expert Sarah Lawson shared six uses for orange peels in her garden[/caption]

Storage Box Shop food storage expert Sarah Lawson shared some versatile ways to use orange peels that extend far beyond the kitchen in your home.

The sustainable practice contributes to a more sustainable and eco-friendly gardening approach but also “unlocks a host of benefits for your plants and soil.”

1. SOIL NOURISHMENT

Lawson said that orange peels are a “fantastic addition” to your compost pile because they’re rich in nitrogen

She added that it’s important to chop them into smaller pieces to speed up the decomposition process and prevent pests from staying around peels.

You can also put small pieces of orange peels directly into the soil.

They will slowly decompose, releasing nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, essential nutrients that plants need to thrive.

2. DETERS PESTS AND ANIMALS

According to Lawson, the strong citrus scent of citrus in orange peels is unappealing to many creepy crawly garden pests.

She suggested scattering small pieces of peels around plants to keep these pests at bay.

Also, it can be a natural deterrent for cats because they dislike the citrus scent.

3. ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY

Orange peels also have another outdoor purpose that’s not meant for the ground but rather higher up.

Lawson recommended filling half an orange peel with bird seeds and hanging it on a tree, turning it into a natural bird feeder.

It attracts birds and adds a “charming touch” to your garden.

4. GARDEN DECOR

Dried orange peels also can add a decorative feel to your garden beds.

“Not only do they add a pop of color and a pleasant aroma, but they also help retain soil moisture and reduce weed growth,” she explained.

5. NATURAL VITAMIN BOOST

Lawson also gave a recipe for a nutrient-rich “tea” that gives plants a vitamin boost that promotes overall health and wellness.

Just soak orange peels in water for a few days and then spray them around your flowers.

6. PLANTER POWER

Orange peels also are a great beginner-friendly basis for any indoor or balcony starter plants.

“Use half an orange peel as a biodegradable pot for starting seeds. Once the seedlings are ready, you can plant them directly in the garden, peel and all,” Lawson explained.

The peel will decompose, offer a nutritional boost, and enrich the soil around the new plant.
