HD Hyundai Heavy to build 4 warships for Peruvian Navy
South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has secured a $463 million order to build four vessels for the Peruvian Navy together with Peru’s state-owned shipbuilder SIMA Peru.
As disclosed, the ships in question are a 3,400-ton frigate, a 2,200-ton oceangoing patrol vessel (OPV) and two 1,500-ton landing vessels. They are part of the Latin American country’s naval fleet modernization program.
The units are planned to be completed at Callao shipyard in Peru by 2029.
According to HD Hyundai Heavy, the deal “will help the company win similar contracts in the Latin American region where warship replacement demands are on the rise”.
The Korean shipbuilder added it will participate in the tender process of the Peruvian Navy for the construction of five frigates, four offshore patrol ships and two landing ships.
In related news, HD Hyundai Heavy and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (HD KSOE) said on March 22 that they had developed, for the first time in Korea, a highly weather-resistant heat-insulating paint for ships. The paint, developed with domestic technology, was applied to the Korean next-generation destroyer (KDDX) and is expected to help strengthen the ship’s survivability.
